Werewolves of London....

This weekend, I'll be flying to London for a few days on business, so I've been thinking about the first time I travelled to the UK. It was in the mid-80s and I went there with members of my high school English class (pretty cool, yeah). While most of my classmates were excited to see the usual monuments and attractions, all I cared about was getting an opportunity to go record shopping. As one of three "punks" in my entire high school, I was often lambasted by my friends for my musical tastes. The bands I picked up on this trip were just fuel for the fire: The Teardrop Explodes, Japan, Fine Young Cannibals, The Mighty Lemon Drops, Thompson Twins, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Buzzcocks....still have each of those records in my collection to this day. On the plane home, my friends were loaded up with souvenirs from the trip. Me, I had a backpack full of wax.

New episode debuts tomorrow, featuring the return of "Guilty Pleasures" with my 12-year-old daughter and emo/pop punk "expert," Emmilee.

Episode 4: Times Are Tough

This week's episode of Twitch features new music from Panic Lift, Imperative Reaction and more, as well as classics from such bands as Blancmange and The Cure. Co-hosted by our very own teenaged in-house emo/punk "expert," Emmi (who just also happens to be my daughter), each week "Guilty Pleasures" will feature tracks from new bands in her CD collection. Should I feel ashamed to like some of the same music as my daughter...maybe...but at least it's not rap!

"Failsafe" - The Panic Lift (from the album Witness To Our Collapse)
"Minus All " - Imperative Reaction (from the album Minus All)

Welcome to Twitch!

In the late 1980s, I launched my very first solo broadcast program, "Twitch," on Syracuse University's WERW radio station. Things were pretty meager then. The station emitted a whopping 10 watts of power, which more or less meant it could be heard within a ten block radius of the campus. We simulcast through the University television network, with cartoons and old horror and sci-fi movies serving as the visual backdrop. Upon my graduation from college in 1991, "Twitch" went off the air. Though I have made several guest appearances on other stations in the years since --- including the legendary WLIR on Long Island --- and have DJed clubs from Munich to Mexico City, I longed for the experimental, open format that defines "college radio." Now, twenty years after it began, "Twitch" returns on the web. Expect to hear a somewhat wide selection of electronic and alternative music, depending on how the mood strikes me. New music will always be the main focus, but expect to hear forgotten classics, too, as well as a few other surprises. Thanks for tuning in...and feel free to email me your requests at: rexxarkana@gmail.com
